Go Manhattan College

Hey Everybody,

Great news out of Manhattan College where two of our students, Rafael and Chasity, were asked to work during the upcoming vacation! Both students will be getting paid for this experience. In addition, Rafael got paid for taking over for an absent colleague just this past week.

Rafael is an alumni of our main site, 754x. He has come a long way since he left us to go to his worksite. Although Rafael is a Yankee fan, I will give him a pass because he is a hard worker and a great person. We used to joke around about his love of the Yankees (and my love of the Mets) when he was at our main site. I am so proud of Rafael and all that he has achieved. Go Rafael!

Here's to 2009

Hello Everyone,

I have to try my best to keep this blog updated. So many great things have been happening at our worksites and our transition sites as well as with our fast developing in-house work program.

First of all, there are the successes. At Fordham @ Lincoln Center, our newest worksite, John Diaz is going to be hired full time! John has only been there for 5 months and he made a great impression. I am always saying that we can get students into some great situations, places that they could not necessarily walk off the street and even get an interview. After that, it is up to you to make that impression and John did just that! Along with John, Jamel Gonzalez will be working at Fordham University in the beautiful Bronx part time on the weekends. I have known Jamel for many years and I had no doubt that he would be a success if he only had the opportunity.

Fordham University in the Bronx has been one of our great worksites for hiring students. Jeysson Santiago, a former Aim for Greatness star, is going to be hired this summer and Kevin Martinez, a student who was in AFG and Work Force, is also going to be hired once he turns 18. I am especially proud of how far Kevin has come and I know a lot of main site teachers who deserve credit for helping him along the way.

At the Armory, Angel Otero has been working as a custodial assistant at Truman High School. Angel's teachers, Mr. Kottkamp and Mr. Tribuzzio, deserve a great deal of credit for showing good work habits to Angel, although we all could agree that he is a very special, hard working young man who deserves credit himself for being present, punctual, prepared, polite and productive.

Angel is one of our Bronx Transition Center (BTC) students. This program, coordinated by Sam Seifman, has been a great success from the time that we inherited it from our friends at the Bronx OTC (P721x). In fact, Mr. Seifman just released figures on the 2006-07 BTC graduating class and 85% of them are currently working!

Mr. Seifman has been tracking our 2007-08 graduates and many of them are working as well. I want to point out a couple of students of note:

Lorraine Rivera and Cindy Falu, two students from our school who were with us for many years, are both working. Cindy works approximately 25 hours per week at Gristedes and Lorraine works at Children's Zone Baby College.

Angel Rodriguez is working at the Hilton Hotel, earning about $20 per hour. Jeffrey Jones is still working at Morningside Hospital, earning about $14 an hour for 20 hrs. per week.

I know that I am missing some important announcements but I will update everyone as soon as I remember or after I consult Ms. Girardat, our Job Developer.

Thank you for visiting!

Work Site Successes

The Work Force Academy has an excellent work site program where students train for careers, sometimes even getting hired at their sites. It is an excellent opportunity for all of our WFA students.

At Morningside, Jeffrey Jones is doing a fantastic job. He is committed to his job and hoping to get hired. Pamela Gonzalez is doing a superior job, especially with housecleaning. For our bilingual teachers, Jorge Aquino is also working at Morningside Hospital and is doing well.

If you go to King's Harbor you will be very happy to see Leslie Porter working (and getting paid) in the OT/PT Department. Tiffany Marks is also working out very well at King's Harbor. Her supervisor could not say enough nice things about her. The supervisors and staff of King's Harbor have an overwhelmingly positive attitude about our students and the service that they provide. Mr. Biggs told me that many of his students have recently been travel trained.

At DOJ, I am proud to announce that Victor Boone is there and he is eager to work. Celeste Green is also a recent arrival at DOJ. Mylana Tucker has had a great deal of success working in the Recreation Dept.

The North Central Bronx Hospital/Jacobi Hospital sites have done an excellent job traning our students in a very short time. One alumni, Luis Rivera, is working full-time in a paid position at Zero International, just one block from our school.

One of the unique features of the Mosholu-Montefiore Community Center is a daycare where Jennifer Almarante is in her last year. Jennifer has come a long way from the bilingual classes of years ago.

Fordham has been a huge success for our school as 21 former students are working in paid, full-time positions throughout the university. Two of this year's students, Justin Dacanay and Jorge Marin, were just hired to work at the college.

The VA Hospital has become a great training ground for other work sites. Justin got his start at the VA. One of the Aim for Greatness Academy students named Rafaelito Del Rosario is doing an excellent job at the VA. He works on a computer in an office where his boss says that he is the perfect employee. The most famous alumni of the Work Force Interns, Jamison Lara, is also working at the VA.

Manhattan College and the Methodist Home for the Aged are also providing excellent training for our students. Jeanette Rodriguez is working part-time at the college in its cafeteria. We have also had great success at Manhattan College with getting our students off of the school bus and onto mass transit.

Lincoln Hospital has been quite a site for us in the past three years. Many students have been hired for excellent positions after having been trained by Ms. Backerman and Ms. Serrano. There are 2 former Work Force Interns working at Lincoln, Eric Layne and Cosiane Gutt. Students at Lincoln Hospital are given such a great opportunity.

The Kingsbridge Armory is one of our three new sites. The students are really offered an excellent training experience at the site. The students basically run the armory and they also keep the grounds clean and well manicured. This worksite has a great deal of promise. Many of the students are also working after school, getting paid by private sector TOP, a special program that reimburses companies that hire our students.

The P10 Teacher's Assist Program is a training program that works in cooperation with another D75 school. Our students work with their students, learning how to be classroom assistants. After they go through the training they work as substitutes in D75 schools. Former 754 students Sashira Duran, Cindy Falu and Lorraine Rivera are all enrolled in this program.

Work Site and Transition Site News!!!

We have had such a successful year in our worksite/transition site program. The Jeffrey M. Rapport School for Career Development is now the home of the Bronx Transition Center, capably coordinated by Mr. Sam Seifman who joins us from 721x. We also inherited three fantastic classes from our sister organization: the Kingsbridge Armory, the Para Training Site at P010 and Morningside Hospital. Transition Sites offer job training through AHRC. Students at our transition sites must be in their last year at 754.

I have visited many of our community based sites this year and I can report that students are doing very well working with our staff members along with the supervisors at each site. Taking a walk through our worksites is like going to a 754 Family Reunion with many former students now employed at these sites. I went to the VA this summer and spoke with Ray Busgith, a former student who now has many responsibilities at the VA. Fordham University has recently hired its 21st students including Justin and Jorge who were just offered jobs this year. Lincoln Hospital has been extremely successful of late with many students who graduated just one and two years ago now working at the expanding hospital. The other worksites all have their successes as well and that will be reflected in a blog post in the very near future.

I just came from a visit at King's Harbor where Leslie Porter is paid to work with the therapists in OT and PT. Tiffany, a very recent addition to King's Harbor, is doing extremely well as are Robert, Monique, John, Jocelyn, Jonathan and Derrick. Mr. Biggs and Ms. Gilliard are doing a fantastic job with their students.

More in the very near future.

April Report: Main Site

Hey Everybody,

After 9 months of no postings at all I think that it is time to say what has been going on here in the Work Force Academy's main site.

Ms. Delgado's Work Force Intern Program has turned over so many students, sending them to our worksites, so there are several new faces now running around with their green vests. Ms. Numani and Ms. Llanos are also working hard with our students, preparing them for a worksite in the very near future. Norberto has made a dramatic turn around since he joined the interns. Michael joined them a little while back. Jonathan Carillo has found his niche with the Interns. Matthew Corcino is still "the Man" in the Intern Program. Jonathan Q, Richie, Maria, Lajourn, Hector and Jonathan R. have also joined to form an incredible team.

The Cafe Program is doing well, as usual, under the watchful eye of Ms. Friedman and Ms. Sanchez. Juan and Anthony are graduating this year. They have come a long way in their time in the Work Force Academy. Britney, Jamel, Charles, Judy, Christian, Ronique, Luis, Robert and Nicolette are well prepared for a community-based worksite by September. There will be plenty of openings in the Cafe Program in just a few short months.

Ms. Freder has an eager group of students organized for her new Copy Crew. They have already done an excellent job with the Emerald Society book and are looking forward to more work in the near future. Of course the Copy Crew would not be able to survive without the capable assistance of Tito who is a whiz with the machines in Room 137.

Our program is moving in a very positive direction. We are discussing programs for next year that will focus on teaching reading and cooperating with a school wide theme of the Fifty States. Ms. Edwards came aboard and brought her incredible skills as a Wilson-trained instructor and the students are finding great success in her class. Mr. Haynes and Mr. Haynes are also trained Wilson reading instructors while Ms. Dalrymple is preparing to utilize Achieve 3000 to teach reading next year. Ms. D. also continues to put out Free Style, a newspaper that is completely written by our students. She also edits "Work Force Academy News" where work is highlighted.

Speaking of work...kudos to Luis Angel Perez from Ms. Delgado's class for working after school and on weekends at the International House of Pancakes here in the Bronx.

Our math department still features Ms. Vasquez, Ms. Freder and Mr. Velasco which will change when Ms. Freder has her full time in house work class next year.

Thank you for viewing my Work Force Academy Blog.

Welcome

Hello Everybody! I am excited about the upcoming school year because I am now going to be running the Bronx Transition Center. We have acquired three new worksites; one that trains students to work as custodians, one that trains students to work in housekeeping and one that shows students how to work in the classroom as teacher's aides. This is in addition to the worksites that we have had for many years. I am very excited about the prospect of working with Mr. Seifman, an expert on transition for many years. I am also very happy to be working closer to Ms. Girardat and Ms. Palma to place students into appropriate worksites. Please feel free to speak with one of us if you have any questions about our worksites or about transition.

The worksites that we had already established are working out very well. When I toured them recently I got the chance to meet the students who are out there and I also met some former students of ours who are still working at these sites but they are now getting paid for their efforts. This year our worksites are going to be more focused on finding employment for our students, whether it's full time or part time.

Looking forward to speaking to everybody on this website and in person.

Frank
